Worried that you don’t have enough space on your disk to save a file you want to download from the web? Worried that the download may take too long and you don’t feel like wasting your time? The Browser Tools-devbeloped Get File Size application is here to lend a helping hand. This application will tell you the exact size of a file you want to download from the web; and if you tell it a little bit about your internet connection, it will also estimate how long it will take to download the file.

Speaking about size, The Get File Size installation file weighs in at a mere 1MB. Run this file and a simple setup wizard will help you get it up and running on your PC – PC that can be powered by anything from Windows 98 up to Windows 7.

There’s nothing complicated about Get File Size’s interface. At the top you have a box into which you must paste the URL of the file you want to download. Hit the “Get!” button and info about that file will be displayed underneath the box. Further down you will see the Details, Menu, Close, and Download buttons.

There are two ways to use Get File Size: as a standalone application and as an Internet Explorer (IE) add-on.

The standalone way goes something like this: launch Get File Size, paste the URL of the file you want to download, hit Get! and the application will present info on the size of the file you want to get. If you go the Options menu and pick your connection type, the application will also tell you how much it will take to download that file (do note that this is an estimate). Hit the Download button and your default browser will launch and it will proceed to download the file you want to get.

Get File Size also integrates with Microsoft’s Internet Explorer browser – that would be the second way to use the application. Right click the file you want to download and you will see a Get File Size entry in the right click context menu. Select this entry and you will find out how large the file you want to download is.

Thanks to Get File Size, you know how small or large a file is before you start the download process. You also know how long it will take to get that file onto your PC.

Pros

Get File Size provides support for numerous Windows editions, from 98 to 7. Use Get File Size as a standalone application or within Internet Explorer. It presents info on a file’s size and on how long it will take to download said file. Initiate the download process from within Get File Size.

Cons

Kept getting a “Get File Size isn’t installed correctly” error message when trying to use the application with IE; but that’s okay, because I never use IE anyway.
